About The Course
Participants will learn and discuss more advanced and speciﬁc legal terms and concepts in English law and their comparison to those in Indonesian law. The program is designed for participants whose first language is not English and wish to study legal English and the principles of Indonesia commercial and contract law. Delegates should have an upper-intermediate to advance level of English to get maximum benefit of this course.
Who Should Attend
Directors, managers, executives, businessmen, deal makers, corporate legal executives and staffs, in-house lawyers, contract managers, customer account managers and relationship managers, supplier and procurement managers, and anyone who has to resolve disputes with third parties. Prior legal or experience with litigation is not required.
Key Learning Outcomes
TOLES (Test of Legal English Skills) materials
TOLES means ‘Test of Legal English Skills’. The TOLES program consists of a structured course of legal English training materials supported by three levels of professional exams. The exam levels are progressive steps towards reaching the standard of legal English required by employers such as international commercial law firms, in-house legal teams in private companies and top-class translators. TOLES legal English training materials and exams have been developed following the advice of experienced commercial lawyers. The top requirements of employers are excellent drafting skills, first-class negotiating skills and a strong sense of commercial awareness.
Put and use legal terms and concepts into good use in real life context
Learn proper niceties in legal correspondence in English rather than transferring these from Indonesian sense and mindset
Use fundamental vocabulary derived from specific areas of law
Grasp a better understanding of the style of formal written legal English and drafting
Gain more confidence in the register of spoken general English in a legal context
Broaden the awareness of the register used by lawyers when drafting and analyzing contracts and other agreements

Founding Partner of Yang & Partners Law Firm
Heriyanto Yang is the founding partner of Yang & Partners Law Firm. He trained and earned his law degree (Sarjana Hukum) from the Faculty of Law of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta. Prior to establishing Yang & Partners, he was a disciple of Mr. Todung Mulya Lubis and an associate at Lubis Santosa & Maulana Law Offices, Jakarta.
Heriyanto has made a very successful debut in the lawyering industry, as he is involved in many high profile cases both nationally and internationally. He was a member of a team involved in assisting and representing four death penalty convicts (two Indonesians and two Australians) in a judicial review application challenging the constitutionality of the death penalty at the Indonesian Constitutional Court (Mahkamah Konstitusi). He was also involved in representing clients at the Commission for the Supervision of Business Competition of the Republic of Indonesia (KPPU). His clients vary from a major international business consulting firm to a Singapore based holding company. He was also an advisor to the Provincial Government of Papua in drawing up a contract with the United Nations Development Program. He is also the leading lawyer in the recently-filed judicial review petition to challenge Indonesia’s election law at the Indonesian Constitutional Court.
As the Founder and Managing Partner in Yang & Partners, Heriyanto is heavily engaged in all corporate and commercial practice as well as dispute resolution works of the firm. He led the corporate and commercial practice group as well asthe dispute resolution practice group in a number of major cross-border transactions and high profile cross-jurisdictional litigations of the firm.
Heriyanto is licensed to practice as an advocate by the Indonesian Bar Association (Peradi), and has been recently appointed as the special staff for the Chairman of the Indonesian Bar Association. He has produced and published works in English on a number of legal issues. In addition to Indonesian and English, Heriyanto also speaks Chinese dialects and Javanese.
